When you are exempt from the long-term care insurance program

Long-term care insurance is managed by municipalities, and long-term care services are provided to eligible persons under the public social insurance system, for which enrollment is mandatory in the case of persons who are 40 years old or older. The Health Insurance Society acts as an agent to collect long-term care insurance premiums from members who are Category 2 insured persons covered by long-term care insurance.

When you are exempt from the long-term care insurance program

Even if you are aged 40 through 64, you will not be an insured person under long-term care insurance if you qualify for any of the exemptions below. Since this affects collection of premiums, please notify the Health Insurance Association if you qualify.

The procedure is handled via notifications from employers.

  • (1)  Insured persons (Category 2 insured persons) who are 40 to less than 65 years old and no longer have an address in Japan
  • (2)  Persons who reach the age of 40 while assigned abroad
  • (3)  Foreigners whose status of residence is three months or less
  • (4)  Persons admitted to an excluded facility
